About Bar Keepers Friend

Bar Keepers Friend is made by SerVaas Laboratories in the USA and has been making cleansers since 1882. Its powder and cream cleansers use oxalic acid, which lifts rust stains, tarnish and mineral deposits that ordinary detergent leaves behind. They contain no chlorine bleach.

Which Bar Keepers Friend should I buy?

Powder or cream?

Powder cleansers include a fine abrasive, so they suit stubborn rust, tarnish and baked-on residue. The cream cleanser is smoother and clings to curved and vertical surfaces, which lowers the risk of fine scratches on polished stainless steel.

How to use it safely

Wet the surface, apply a small amount, rub gently with a damp cloth or sponge, then rinse within one minute. Don't use it on non-stick cookware, hard-anodised aluminium, gold, silver, marble, granite, or painted, lacquered or mirrored surfaces. Never mix it with bleach, ammonia or other cleaning products, and wear gloves if you have sensitive skin.

Common questions

Does Bar Keepers Friend remove rust?

Yes. The oxalic acid in its cleansers lifts rust stains, tarnish and mineral deposits from suitable hard surfaces. Test a small hidden area first if you're unsure about a finish.

Is Bar Keepers Friend safe on stainless steel?

Yes. It's made for stainless steel, including sinks, taps and cookware. For polished finishes, the Soft Cleanser cream is the gentler choice.

Can I use Bar Keepers Friend on a glass cooktop?

Use the Multipurpose Cooktop Cleaner, which is made for smooth glass and ceramic cooktops, including induction.
