What is nano hydroxyapatite?

Hydroxyapatite is a calcium phosphate mineral. It's the main mineral in tooth enamel and is also found in bone. "Nano" means the particles are very small, measured in nanometres. Some toothpaste brands use nano hydroxyapatite in place of fluoride.

Hydroxyapatite or fluoride toothpaste?

Fluoride toothpaste is what most dental bodies, including the Australian Dental Association, recommend for most people. Some people prefer a fluoride-free toothpaste, and nano hydroxyapatite is one of the ingredients used in them. If you're not sure which suits you or your children, ask your dentist.

What's in Davids Hydroxi toothpaste?

Davids Hydroxi toothpaste is made with nano hydroxyapatite, calcium carbonate, hydrated silica, baking soda and xylitol, and some versions also contain coconut oil. According to the manufacturer, it's fluoride-free and SLS-free, with no artificial flavours, colours or preservatives. It comes in a recyclable metal tube and is made in the USA. How to choose a toothpaste

• Fluoride: decide whether you want fluoride or a fluoride-free formula. Each product page says which it is.
• SLS-free: SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) is the foaming agent in many toothpastes. Some people prefer to avoid it.
• Flavour: choose a classic mint, or a fruity flavour if you or your kids don't like mint.
• Tube size: compare the price per gram, and pick a larger tube if your household goes through toothpaste quickly.
• Packaging: metal tubes can be recycled where metal recycling is available.
